Green Hydrogen in the Golden State: Angeles Link and Realizing the HyBuild™ LA Vision
By Janice Lin, Founder and President of the Green Hydrogen Coalition
They say good things come in threes. Well, what a week it’s been for green hydrogen!
First, HyDeal Ambition announced earlier this week that it launched the first industrial implementation of its platform, HyDeal España, as the world’s largest integrated renewable and competitive green hydrogen (GH) hub. The U.S. Department of Energy followed, releasing its Request for Information (RFI) for the implementation of the major clean hydrogen initiatives of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
To top it off, SoCalGas made a major commitment to advance GH development and accelerate a zero-carbon future for the greater Los Angeles region.
SoCalGas’s Angeles Link project would be the largest GH energy infrastructure system in the country and would support deep decarbonization of the region, delivering clean, renewable energy from wind and solar power and cutting the use of natural gas, diesel, and other fossil fuels. Harmful air emissions from industrial processes, heavy-duty trucks, and other hard-to-electrify sectors of the Southern California economy would be cut dramatically, supporting the health of local communities while helping to meet California’s emissions and air quality goals.
Angeles Link aligns with the GHC’s vision of creating North America’s first GH industrial hub at scale in Los Angeles. HyBuild ™Los Angeles aims to aggregate multi-sectoral off take (e.g., power, transportation, industrial, maritime, aviation), allowing for the development of a competitive, high volume supply chain and needed infrastructure for low-cost, mass scale GH delivery.
Our models demonstrate that Los Angeles can achieve less than $2 per kilogram delivered mass-scale GH by 2030. At this price point, GH would be economically more attractive than diesel or gasoline. Importantly, this delivered cost is only achievable by transporting GH molecules via 100% hydrogen pipeline into the LA Basin. We believe that HyBuild™ LA is well-positioned to participate in the DOE’s Hydrogen Earthshot as North America’s first GH hub, and that this project can serve as a model for additional GH ecosystems throughout the nation. The Angeles Link, connecting GH supply, offtake, and storage via dedicated pipeline capacity, is a key component in service of this vision, and we are incredibly thankful for SoCalGas’s leadership.
The announcement of Angeles Link is only the first development of what I expect to be a tremendously active and impactful year for the GHC, our partners, our economy, and citizens across the Los Angeles metro region. I hope you too can see the vision of an equitable energy transition that leverages GH to decarbonize our power and fuel supply and create pathways for economic development and job creation begin to take shape. And I hope you share my enthusiasm and optimism for realizing this future following these tremendously exciting announcements. I am convinced that the best is yet to come.
Disclaimer: In September 2022, GHC rebranded HyDeal North America and Los Angeles to HyBuild™ North America and HyBuild™ Los Angeles.
