About the HyBuild Carolinas Initiative

HyBuild Carolinas is the Green Hydrogen Coalition’s initiative to achieve mass-scale, low-cost delivered green hydrogen in North and South Carolina. Our vision is to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen across multiple sectors, drive deep decarbonization, reduce local pollution, and create diversely skilled clean energy jobs.

The initiative brings together participants from across the green hydrogen ecosystem to establish a vision for a sustainable and scalable green hydrogen economy, and in close collaboration with community stakeholders, co-create the roadmap for how to get there.

North and South Carolina Have Many Potential Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Offtakers

The Carolinas are home to many industries that are foundational to our nation’s growth – from steel, to industrial manufacturing, to paper mills – all supported by abundant existing infrastructure and a skilled workforce. In addition, the Carolinas also has two deep water maritime sea ports – Wilmington and Charleston – and multiple international airports. Together, these abundant end uses of green hydrogen and the states’ strategic coastal position make North and South Carolina an excellent location for a mass-scale green hydrogen hub with strong potential for future exports.

Read the Report, HyBuild™ Carolinas

HyBuild™ Carolinas conducted an assessment that evaluated the region's potential demand for green hydrogen, examined various production pathways, and measured the required infrastructure for green hydrogen delivery. The effort also involved rigorous technical analysis and extensive stakeholder engagement to facilitate alignment and pinpoint key areas for action.

Furthermore, the assessment developed and modeled pathways for achieving near-term, mid-term, and long-term progress in green electrolytic hydrogen production and utilization across the Carolinas as well as identified potential demand in the Charlotte, Charleston, Clemson, and Wilmington regions.

Four key findings to uncover the pathways to a green hydrogen economy by 2030 and 2040 are included in this assessment.

Green Hydrogen Buyers Advisory Board

The Green Hydrogen Buyers Advisory Board are prospective large-scale green hydrogen buyers in the region who provide industry-specific insights on green hydrogen demand potential, needed infrastructure, and policies that would enable widespread green hydrogen adoption.

As the largest airline in the Carolinas, we’re proud to support HyBuild Carolinas, which will play a critical role in accelerating the development of green hydrogen in one of our most important markets. Decarbonizing air travel requires a collaborative approach across all sectors of the economy, and the Green Hydrogen Coalition is helping to lead the way in North Carolina and South Carolina. Green hydrogen is a key element to scaling sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogen propulsion, two cornerstones of American’s strategy to reach destination net-zero by 2050.

HyBuild Carolinas Advisors

HyBuild Carolinas is supported by a diverse range of local, regional, and national subject matter experts. HyBuild Carolinas Advisors provide their unique expertise to support the mission of the initiative.

Green hydrogen is a key technology for both deep decarbonization and the preservation and creation of high-quality, family-sustaining jobs. Hydrogen can reduce emissions while leveraging both our existing infrastructure and the skills that exist in the current workforce. This is an opportunity for workers from underserved communities to be trained for a career in sectors from construction to manufacturing to power generation.

HyBuild™ is a Proven Concept

HyBuild™ North America is modeled after HyDeal Ambition, a similar project launched in 2020 in Europe and founded by GHC Board Member Thierry Lepercq. HyDeal Ambition recently announced the launch of the world’s biggest green hydrogen hub: HyDeal España.

HyDeal España will begin production in 2025 and will deliver competitive renewable hydrogen to industrial offtakers (steel, ammonia, fertilizer) in Asturias. Over the next 20 years, clients plan to purchase 6.6 million tons of green hydrogen from this system. Its capacity is expected to reach 9.9 GW of solar and 7.4 GW of electrolysis by 2030.
