2024 Impact Report - Advancing Green Hydrogen Solutions for Climate Action

Since 2019, the GHC has pursued policies and practices that support the widespread production and use of green hydrogen. Our work has focused on overcoming the barriers that hinder the growth of a robust green hydrogen market—challenges like limited shared infrastructure, regulatory uncertainty, and misconceptions about the green hydrogen value chain. The GHC’s 2024 Impact Report highlights this year’s key accomplishments in these core activities.

As 2024 comes to a close, we invite you to consider making a tax-deductible gift to the GHC by December 31. Your continued support is crucial to move our shared goals forward and to help us build a more sustainable and equitable future. Individual donations can now be conveniently made online at gh2forclimate.org!

HyBuild™ North America Contracts Workstream’s Consumption Profiles Working Group Report

Developed by Sheppard Mullin for the GHC, this report summarizes the findings conducted during the HyBuild™ North America Contracts Workstream Working Groups. The report defines three green hydrogen consumption profiles, highlights the key themes discussed across all working groups, and identifies the specific needs, challenges, and potential solutions in each consumption profile. In doing so, the report aims to provide insights into closing the green premium gap and is intended to help improve the efficiency and efficacy of green hydrogen procurement nationally.

Clean Hydrogen and Grid Reliability: Overview of Potential Use Cases and Considerations for States

This brief provides an overview of the benefits and challenges associated with clean hydrogen for two specific electric sector use cases — long-duration energy storage and microgrids — with the aim of aiding state leaders in evaluating clean hydrogen initiatives as part of their statewide planning efforts. Learn about key use cases of clean hydrogen for informed consideration.

Understanding 45V and the Three Pillars

With final regulations on 45V still underway, this brief delves into the findings discussed during the Western Green Hydrogen Initiative’s (WGHI) most recent webinar regarding 45V’s potential to accelerate clean hydrogen market liftoff in the U.S. Learn about the three pillars and several key themes that emerged amongst the 30,000 comments received by the Treasury as well as state considerations for maximizing the efficacy of the 45V tax credit.

California’s Blueprint to Leverage Green Ammonia Production as a Key Decarbonization Tool

Renewable ammonia has the global potential to replace conventional ammonia and achieve the needed emissions reductions in hard-to-decarbonize sectors. With a focus on California, this brief highlights the value proposition, production pathways, technology trends, barriers, and market potential of renewable ammonia. Additionally, this blueprint explores how California can tackle these barriers through key policy levers, both at the state and federal level, incentivize increased supply and demand, and foster industry and public acceptance of renewable ammonia.

HyBuild™ Carolinas

HyBuild™ Carolinas is an initiative aimed at the widespread adoption of mass-scale, affordable green hydrogen in North and South Carolina. An assessment was conducted that evaluated the region's potential demand for green hydrogen, examined various production pathways, and measured the required infrastructure for green hydrogen delivery. Four key findings to uncover the pathways to a green hydrogen economy by 2030 and 2040 are included in this assessment.

Climate Pollution Reduction Grant: Program Summary and Clean Hydrogen Opportunities

This brief serves as a guide for states interested in potential funding opportunities for clean hydrogen development through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program. The goal of this brief is to help states better understand the intersection of CPRG and clean hydrogen so they can identify key application priorities and implementation opportunities.

2023 Impact Report - Fueling Tomorrow: Powering Change Through Green Hydrogen

Throughout 2023, the GHC has diligently pursued its mission to facilitate policies and practices that promote the widespread production and utilization of green hydrogen. Our focus has centered on tackling barriers that currently prohibit the growth of a robust green hydrogen market. Through targeted educational initiatives, coalition-building endeavors, and market development campaigns, our core activities strive to overcome these obstacles and thereby advance green hydrogen at scale for an accelerated and equitable clean energy transition. The GHC’s 2023 Impact Report highlights this year’s key accomplishments in these core activities.

Expanding Horizons: Best Practices for Modeling Long-Duration Energy Storage

Prepared by Strategen Consulting Inc., Expanding Horizons: Best Practices for Modeling Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) highlights findings and best practices from LDES modeling practitioners to help policymakers, utilities, and grid planners manage rapidly evolving technological and regulatory landscapes, as well as accurately and effectively incorporate LDES into their clean energy planning and modeling.

Equity, Energy Justice, and Community Benefits — A Convening Brief

WGHI hosted a virtual convening in July 2023 that brought together public sector leaders from states with diverse resources, social and political landscapes, and energy needs. This brief details the learnings from that convening and offers options for states to better integrate equity, justice, and community benefits considerations in their efforts to stand up clean hydrogen programs.
